I bought this detector as a surprise for our vacation after reading all of these positive reviews and was terribly disappointed. It didn't detect any metal except for our van...even coins that were right in front of it. I don't know if we got a defective unit, but unless the metal in question was huge and thick like a car or a metal swing set, it wouldn't beep.

What do you get in a metal detector for [...]? Actually, you get a pretty good little piece of equipment; but don't assume that it'll take the place of a full sized, more expensive metal detector. However, this will definitely do for kids ages six and up.

The metal detector takes one 9 volt alkaline battery, extends to about four and a half feet long, and can do the basics: find coins and other metals close to the surface. If the coins are deeper than two inches, you're out of luck. Even at two inches, items are difficult to detect. I got a lost of false reads that resulted from the item bumping a twig or a rock. And there were times during use that I thought it was going to fall apart.

But the kids loved it. I couldn't ask for a better tool to introduce them to the hobby. We tossed pennies out into the lawn, and they immediately went out and found them all. They also found some other coins that appear to have fallen out of someone's pocket at one time or another.

If you're interested in getting the kids something to keep them occupied, or to start them off with a new hobby, look no further than this; but if you're getting this for yourself under the assumption that it'll take the place of one of the more expensive metal detectors, you'll be sorely disappointed.

My contractor buried one of my sprinkler heads last year when he put in my patio. I finally decided to find it but didn't want to dig up 50 square feet to locate it. So I went to sears to buy a $150 detector but they only sell it online. Online means amazon to me. After reading the positive reviews I thought, Why not pop for this toy for twenty bucks? It came in two days. I went out to the back yard and yes, I found the head in 10 minutes. One little beep was all I needed. Now I'm putting it away for my granddaughter to use when she gets a bit bigger. Or until another dumb contractor buries something I need in my back yard. Hey wait, I'm going to the beach on Sunday. Hmm, maybe I'll find a rolex watch.........

I got this kit the year before last. It looked very interesting from the packaging, but when I opened it I was not impressed. There are not very many experiments in here. The glasses were interesting for about 1 minute, until I looked through them. The dog biscuit recipe was nice, however, but the other experiments were not very interesting at all.

this is fun for about 3 minutes. after the first time you look through the glasses its a bore. the dog biscits are good but thats about it. it does have a lot of facts about dogs but i still wouldn't buy it.

Very Fun! Very educational, but will quickley bore people. I would defenitally reccommend this to any person looking for a educational, and fun kit!
